The Marchesa left Cowes on 8.1.82 and sailed for the East by the Mediterranean and Suez Canal. Once in the Indies she called at the Moluccas, New Guinea, Celebes, North Borneo, the Sulu Islands, and at Formosa (= Taiwan), where Guillemard took an overland trip from Keelung to Tamsuithe. The cruise proceeded to the Liu-Kiu Islands, Japan and the Ryukyu Islands, and went as far as Bering Island and Kamchatka. [...] The narrative of the cruise [...] dwells mainly on discoveries in the more remote locations, rather than repeating descriptions of the more familiar ports of call in China and Japan“ (Howgego). - Guillemard war Mitglied der Royal Geographic Society und der erste Dozent für Geographie in Cambridge.
