IV/1, 301, 9. - First edition, presented here with the place of printing given as ‘Dreßden’. - Winckelmann’s first independent publication on the excavations at Herculaneum and, at the same time, one of the seminal texts of modern archaeology. The work was written during Winckelmann’s stays in Rome and Naples and, for the first time, provided a wider German-speaking readership with a critical account of the excavations at Herculaneum, which had been underway since 1738, as well as an art-historical and philological analysis of the finds. - It is dedicated to Heinrich, Imperial Count von Brühl, whose support was of considerable importance to Winckelmann’s academic career.
