The work was written during Winckelmann’s stays in Rome and Naples and, for the first time, provided a wider German-speaking readership with a critical account of the excavations at Herculaneum, which had been underway since 1738, as well as an art-historical and philological analysis of the finds. - It is dedicated to Heinrich, Imperial Count von Brühl, whose support was of considerable importance to Winckelmann’s academic career.
