Hieronymus, Sophronius Eusebius. Vita Sancti Hylarionis (Chapters 5–14). Latin manuscript on parchment. (Germany, c. 1150). 8 pages on 2 leaves in a private linen binding with a gold-embossed title on the cover. 2 columns of 32 lines in a Gotica rotunda script in brown ink. Text area: approx. 170 x 115 mm. Leaf size: approx. 200 x 145 mm.
(With [partially filled] gaps and wear resulting in loss of text; the second leaf is more heavily worn. Traces of worm damage.)
Early manuscript fragment containing chapters 5 to 14 of the hagiography of Saint Hilarion of Gaza, written by Jerome (347–420). In his Vita, Jerome describes the life of Hilarion, a Christian ascetic and miracle-worker who was born around 291 in Tabatha near Gaza and died in 371 near Paphos in Cyprus. Hilarion founded a community of hermits in Palestine and gained great renown through his strict ascetic lifestyle and numerous miracles. Among the miracles recorded are the healing of a barren woman and the liberation of bewitched racehorses in Gaza. Hilarion later retired to Cyprus, where he remained active until his death. During the Crusades, his relics were transferred to Duravel in France.
