(The fastening straps are missing; the pages are slightly creased and stained. There is a stamp on the back cover; otherwise, there are minor signs of age and wear.)

First annotated translation by Isaac Casaubon. - Polyainos lived in Rome as an orator and lawyer and published the approximately 900 examples of stratagems at the start of the Parthian War (161–166 AD). He gathered the examples from many works by historians to which he had access; he probably also invented some of them.
Dibdin II, 348 “Isaac Casaubon was the first to provide us with the Greek text of Polyaenus, from a very imperfect manuscript, which he procured at great expense.” – Copy dedicated by Casaubon to I. Antonio Sarraceno (Jean-Antoine Sarrasin; 1547–1598) in the lower margin of the title page: “To I. Antonio Sarraceno, a most distinguished and learned man, as a token of both fear (?) and friendship. Is. Casaubonus”. With a further handwritten owner’s inscription by Philipp Mestrezat (1618–1690).
