Missale Romanu(m): multis frigijs, imaginibus, ac divine scripture et sacroru(m) doctoru(m) auctoritatibus ad festinitatu(m) co(n)gruentiam decoratum. Venedig: L. Giunta, 9. Januar 1506. 22,6 x 16 cm. With a woodcut title page, a woodcut printer’s mark on the title page, numerous woodcut initials, woodcut illustrations within the text, and 49 ornamental pages framed by woodcut borders and containing large woodcut illustrations. 8 unnumbered, 257 (of 261) numbered leaves, 1 unnumbered. leaves (sections: +⁸, a-o⁸, p⁴, q-z⁸, aa-ii⁸, kk⁶). Gothic type. Two-column printing in black and red. Following leaf p², there are 8 handwritten parchment leaves to complete the text. The printed text is followed by 44 pages of handwritten additions in black ink.Brown leather over wooden boards, bound with 4 bands and 2 remnants of clasps. Endpapers made from an old parchment manuscript. Numerous loose leaves.
(Rubbed, bumped, scuffed and stained. Front spine joint restored; rear spine joint with missing binding; clasps lost. The endpapers contain extensive notes in an old hand. Endpapers show signs of worm damage. Title page stained, with a torn corner and a handwritten call number in black ink. With numerous traces and remnants of loose leaves in the outer margins. Folio n⁸ almost completely detached from the binding. Folio p² with a large tear backed with Japanese paper. Four folios from section p are missing. Slightly browned, with finger marks and age spots in places. Occasional small paper thinning and a few marginal notes. Slightly damp edges throughout.)
EDIT16 CNCE 11510. - A characteristic example of the richly illustrated Venetian liturgical books of the early 16th century from the renowned workshop of Lucantonio Giunta. The combination of two-colour typography, large-scale illustrations and a multitude of figurative initials reflects the high standards of decoration that Venetian printers developed for liturgical books intended for ecclesiastical use. The handwritten additions to this copy also give the Missal a unique scope of use and, together with the numerous page markers, illustrate its intensive practical function as a liturgical instrument.
