Schneider, L(ouis): Das Buch vom Rothen Adler-Orden. (Berlin: A. W. Hayns Erben, um 1871). 36 x 26,7 cm. With a colour lithograph frontispiece, a title page in woodcut and 22 colour lithographs after Ludwig Burger; in the first part, each page features a decorative border. VIII pp., 1 leaf, 139, 106 pp. Half-leather binding, using what is believed to be the original spine cover with a gold-stamped title on the spine; full gold edging; in a half-linen slipcase.
(The slipcase is scuffed. The spine is slightly scuffed. The cover has been replaced. Mostly slightly foxed, with water stains in places.)
See Lipperheide Of 69, VI. - A reprint, probably published in 1871, with a paginated appendix. - From an accompanying note by an antiquarian bookseller: ‘Unfortunately, this rare and valuable original copy of ‘Das Buch vom Rothen-Adler-Orden’ from 1857 is now considered one of the great rarities on the auction circuit. With this work in particular, the author, Louis Schneider, went beyond the scope of the numerous publications on orders and wearable decorations—including illustrated ones—that were already available at the time, as he did not, like them, confine himself merely to descriptions and pictorial representations of the decorations. [...] This first edition was only made possible as a private print published by A. W. Hayn in 1857 and was presented as a gift to a select few individuals and institutions. It is bound here together with the two supplements from 1863 and 1868. [...] This book, reissued for general sale in 1861 to mark the coronation of King Wilhelm I, already cost 18 thalers in its standard edition, not including the two supplements from 1863 and 1868 with their additional colour lithographs. The complete work then had to be taken over, by ‘Highest Order’, by the well-known and prominent publishing house of Alexander Duncker in Berlin, and was published in a limited number of copies. However, this also increased the cost of the book considerably, so that King William I felt compelled to purchase further volumes in addition to his original subscription of 25 copies and to use them as gifts.”
