It is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery dating from the Ming Dynasty, around 1560. Filchner explored the monastery and the surrounding countryside beginning around 1926. It is considered one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. The dust jacket is adorned with the Namtschuwangdan, or Kalachakra Mantra, a protective symbol of Tantric Buddhism.
