Vámbéry was a Hungarian orientalist and Turkologist and is thought to have worked for the British secret service for a time. A fictional version of himself appears in Bram Stoker’s novel ‘Dracula’, published in 1897, as Arminius from Budapest and a friend of Abraham van Helsing.
