(Worn and slightly bumped; spine faded. Title page stamped and bearing signature marks on both sides. Endpaper with a mounted antiquarian description and antiquarian label. The map has two large tears backed with paper and tears along the folds. The plates are partly heavily foxed. Tanned and slightly foxed. With a few marginal notes in pencil.)
Henze V, S. 377. - In 1863, the Hungarian orientalist and linguist Hermann Vámbéry undertook an extraordinary research expedition through the Central Asian khanates of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand, disguised as a dervish. The aim of his journey was not only to explore the largely inaccessible regions of Central Asia, but also, in particular, to investigate the linguistic and ethnic affinities between the Hungarians and the Turkic-speaking peoples of Central Asia. Furthermore, Vámbéry made a significant contribution to Turkology by compiling the first German–Turkmen dictionary.
