First edition. – W. A. Knoche was a meteorologist, geophysicist and cultural anthropologist. In 1911, he led a Chilean expedition to Easter Island (Rapa Nui). This account is particularly interesting because he came into contact with two Easter Islanders who were still alive at the time and who were able to provide him with first-hand accounts of myths, dances, songs and details of religious rituals. Knoche was thus the last person to have had contact with representatives of the ancient Easter Island culture.
