Contains 27 (of 39; 5 full-page) original etchings, some in the aquatint style and some drypoint, on 5 (of 6) folded sheets, each folded into a leporello. 1 double-sheet catalogue of illustrations with a printer’s mark. Loose sheets in title envelopes.
(The fairy tale ‘The Boy Who Left Home to Learn Fear’, with its 11 etchings, and the frontispiece ‘Catherina Dorothea Viehmann’ are missing.)
From the inventory of Galerie Der Spiegel, Cologne - No. 89 of 100 copies; each title page and the printer’s mark are signed and numbered. - Stangos 260–288. Scottish Arts Council 70–108. - Contains the fairy tales ‘Little Sea Hare’; ‘Fundevogel’, ‘Rapunzel’, ‘Old Rinkrank’; and ‘Rumpelstiltskin’. - ‘But for the whole of 1969 there’s no other painting, because in about March I started the etchings for Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm. It was something I’d been wanting to do for a few years, and by then, I’d gathered enough material to get started. I did quite a few drawings for it; I was drawing a lot at that time [ …] I’d always enjoyed the fairy tales very much and thought I’d like to illustrate them, to create a book rather like the Cavafy book, using some of the stories; I’d read them all – about three hundred and fifty. By the time I began the etchings, I’d decided to narrow it down to about twenty stories … In the end, I kept cutting stories out, realising I couldn’t illustrate too many” (D.
