Seume, J(ohann) G(ottfried): Spaziergang nach Syrakus im Jahre 1802. Braunschweig u. Leipzig: gedr. bei Fr. Vieweg [für J. F. Hartknoch] 1803. 21,5 x 13 cm. With a frontispiece [caricature of Lord Bristol, Bishop of Derry, after J. Chr. Reinhart, by Veit Hans Fr. Schnorr von Carolsfeld] and a title page with a vignette. XVI, 491 pp. (493 pp. in the text, pp. 351–52 duplicated). Presumably later paperback with back label.
(Scuffed and bumped; cover slightly chipped. Stains from damp and age; pp. 273–277 with a small burn hole; missing the last page, ‘Printing error’.)
Goed. V, 418 f., 68,10. Brieger 2239. - First edition. - The travelogue was published in Wieland’s ‘Neuer Teutscher Merkur’ whilst the journey was still underway. Unlike Goethe’s ‘Italian Journey’, Seume does not describe an artist’s formative experience here, but views Italy through the eyes of a politically engaged traveller who measures the social misery of the present against Italy’s former greatness.
