Lehmann-Haupt, an art historian and book scholar, emigrated to the USA in 1929 and returned to Germany in 1945 on behalf of the American military authorities. This work was published on the occasion of his return to the USA. From 1948 to 1968, he worked for the antiquarian bookseller H. P. Kraus in New York.
