Book of Hours. – Single leaf with a miniature of the Crucifixion from a Dutch Book of Hours. Second half of the 15th century.
(Recto mounted on a passe-partout with two strips of adhesive tape. Slight light damage and minor spots.)
Parchment. 222 x 152 mm. Text area approx. 122 x 80 mm. Single column, 19 lines, in dark brown Textura. Text highlights in red.
The recto side contains the opening of the Non of the Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On the recto and verso, there are a total of 4 two-line and 5 single-line initials in gold on a red, blue or red-and-blue ground, with delicate white decoration in the inner and outer fields. The text is framed at the top and bottom by broad, multicoloured acanthus and floral borders featuring numerous golden buds. The left-hand outer margin features a delicate extension of the borders. The text block on the left-hand margin is flanked by a decorative bar in gold, white and red. On the recto, a line-filler bar in red, gold and blue with ornamentation and fleur-de-lis in white. The miniature measures 42 × 44 mm. It depicts the Crucifixion scene: In the centre, against a divided background, Christ on the cross; to his left, the three mourners (Mary, Mary Magdalene, John). To the right of the cross, two soldiers, one of whom holds a lance bearing the inscription ‘Vere filius Dei erat iste’ (the centurion Longinus, who professed his faith). In front of the two soldiers stands another figure, pointing his finger at Christ, dressed in royal robes with an Arabic-style headdress (turban). This depicts a Jewish dignitary or scribe, portrayed in a regal, exaggerated manner, who mockingly challenges Christ to prove his divinity by coming down from the cross. The details of the robes, the haloes and the background structures are highlighted in gold. The scene is enclosed within a decorative gold frame.
