Straßburg: Johannes Grüninger 1514. - Stark restauriertes Fragment mit umfangreichen restauratorischen Ergänzungen und entsprechendem Erhaltungszustand. 26,3 x 18,7 cm. With 28 (of 40) partly coloured woodcuts, some of which are full-page. 149 (of 172) Roman-numbered leaves. Mod. Leather bound over wooden lids with 4 bands, corner fittings and a clasp.
(Heavily restored copy with missing pages. The title page and folios I–IX, XI, XII, XIV, XIX, XLV, LXXV, LXXVI, LXXVIII–LXXX, XC, XCIIII and CXXII are missing; some of the missing folios have been bound in with [incomplete] handwritten copies, whilst the title page is a photocopy. Only a few leaves are free from repairs, missing sections or defects. Some leaves have been pasted in, with backing and marginal additions; often with loss of text or marginal notes. Missing sections of text have in some cases been supplemented by hand. Throughout, there are small drawings, mostly of horses, in brown ink in the margins. With some marginal notes in old hand. The woodcuts present also frequently have missing sections, patches, etc. Tanned, with finger marks and brown stains in places.)

VD16 H 2674. - A rare Strasbourg edition of the courtly prose novel, translated from the French by Countess Elisabeth of Nassau-Saarbrücken. The story centres on Duke Herpin of Bourges and his son Lewe (Leuwen), whose family is torn apart by war, betrayal and political conflicts. Lewe must endure numerous adventures, loses his homeland and fights to regain his rightful rule. He is aided in this by the mysterious ‘White Knight’. The novel spans several generations and tells of chivalry, loyalty, rule, love, betrayal, captivity and reunion.
