With 9 colour lithographic plates and lithographic book decorations. 1 leaf, 167, 38 pp. Cloth-bound, using the original cover linings in blue. Full gold edging. Bookbinder’s label from C. W. Vogt & Sohn, Court Bookbinders, Berlin.
(Worn, bumped and stained. Spine covered differently. Interior shows foxing, with a small water stain on the lower edge. The last three plates show more severe foxing, particularly on the reverse. Contains a few marginal notes in pencil.)
Lipperheide Of 69, IX. - Published as part of the series ‘Die Preussischen Orden, Ehrenzeichen u. Auszeichnungen. Geschichtlich, Bildlich, Statistisch’. - Covers the history, statutes, conferral practices and ceremonial aspects of the Order of the Black Eagle. Includes an extensive appendix of documents and a register of Knights of the Order. The plates depict the Order’s insignia, the charter of foundation, Frederick I and William I in full regalia, a herald bearing the coat of arms, and the Chapter of the Order under William I in the Chapter House at Königsberg. - Louis Schneider (1805–1878), a Prussian actor, writer, military historian and reader to both Frederick William IV and King William I, was one of the most significant authors on Prussian orders of chivalry. From the 1830s onwards, he published numerous works on military and cultural history, some of which remain among the most important sources on phaleristics to this day.
