(Spines restored, corners and edges rubbed, cover cloths slightly stained. The half-title page and title page bear a stamp from the editorial office of the ‘Berliner Neueste Nachrichten’; the half-title page also bears a stamped bookplate by Walter Seydel. Water-stained margins, slight foxing, finger-stains in places. The plates show hardly any browning or staining.)

Includes an extensive appendix of documents and a register of Knights of the Order. The plates depict the Order’s insignia, the charter of foundation, Frederick I and William I in full regalia, a herald bearing the coat of arms, and the Chapter of the Order under William I in the Chapter House at Königsberg. - Louis Schneider (1805–1878), a Prussian actor, writer, military historian and reader to both Frederick William IV and King William I, was one of the most significant authors on Prussian orders of chivalry. From the 1830s onwards, he published numerous works on military and cultural history, some of which remain among the most important sources on phaleristics to this day.
