The author provides a systematic account of the ecclesiastical and secular orders of knighthood existing in Europe at that time, and explains their origins, history, constitution, hierarchy and insignia. Particular emphasis is placed on the description of the orders’ insignia, which are illustrated by an extensive series of plates.
