Johann Pistorius Nidanus: Polonicae historiae corpus: hoc est, Polonicarum rerum latini recentiores & veteres scriptores, quotquot extant, uno volumine compraehensi omnes & in aliquot distributi tomos. 3 parts in 1 volume. Basel: S. Henricpetri 1582. 34 x 21 cm. With 2 different woodcut printer's marks. 6 leaves, 255 pages; 5 leaves, 1 blank leaf, 833 pages, 1 blank leaf; 2 leaves, 166 pages, 1 leaf. Blind-stamped pigskin on 5 bands over wooden covers with 2 clasps; spine covered with white sheepskin in the 18th century and fitted with 2 spine labels.
(Worn and worm-eaten. The inside of the covers is heavily worm-eaten. Heavy worm damage at the beginning and end; otherwise, only slight traces of worm damage. Slightly browned and stained throughout; a few pages are more heavily browned. The title page bears a handwritten ownership note and the stamp of the St. Peter Abbey Library in Salzburg.)

NDB XX, S. 486 f. - First edition of this comprehensive collection of sources on Polish history. - Pistorius grew up as the fifth child in a humanist-oriented parsonage and studied in Marburg, Wittenberg, Tübingen, Padua, and Paris. After earning his doctorate in medicine, he became known as a physician and historian and served at the court of Baden beginning in 1575, where he authored significant works on German and Polish history. Through his father’s extensive library and manuscripts, he gained deep insights into the history of the Reformation. Although he was initially close to Lutheranism, he converted to the Catholic Church in 1588 and became an important advocate of the Catholic Reformation. In high ecclesiastical offices, he championed educational reforms and the training of the clergy. His famous library was regarded as a significant scholarly collection; about 150 volumes have survived to this day.
