Graesse IV, 44. VD18 10536280. - The only edition of this first German translation from the original Arabic text. Earlier German versions are based on translations into other European languages. - The translation of the Qur’an by David Friedrich Megerlin (1699–1778), a Protestant theologian and scholar of classical philology, was described in the literary journal ‘Frankfurter gelehrte Anzeigen’ as a “miserable production”; nevertheless, Goethe is said to have made frequent use of this very translation.
