A rare Lyon edition of the Rule and Constitutions of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns, the branch of the Carmelite Order reformed by Saint Teresa of Ávila. The volume contains the Order’s rules and statutes governing the religious life of the Carmelite nuns, thereby providing a direct insight into the austere contemplative way of life of the reformed Carmelite nuns in the 17th century. The community, placed under the patronage of the Glorious Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, traces its origins back to the reform carried out by Teresa of Ávila in the late 16th century. Among other things, its constitutions governed the nuns’ enclosure, prayer, fasting, poverty and communal life.
