With 8 illustrated frontispieces featuring woodcut vignettes (repeated) and 7 (out of 8) engraved folding maps. Half-leather with a spine label and a library tag.
(Scuffed and slightly bumped; some of the headbands are somewhat damaged; the leather is heavily staining. Endpapers show signs of glue staining. The half-title page (recto) and main title page (verso) bear the stamps of a nobleman’s library. The interior is mostly slightly foxed. In Vol. 5, some leaves are stuck together, presumably due to damp. In Vol. 1, one leaf has been backed at the bottom edge. In Vol. 8, two leaves with torn edges have been backed; the undamaged leaves from another copy have been bound in after the correction sheet. The map from Vol. 7 is missing.)

Based on decades of source research, this work laid the foundations for scholarly research into Ottoman history in the German-speaking world and was regarded as the definitive standard account for decades. The complete edition was published in 10 volumes between 1827 and 1835; this volume contains the first 8 volumes of the original edition.
