Based on original Ottoman sources, this work by the orientalist and diplomat Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall (1774–1856) offers one of the earliest systematic accounts of the constitution, administration and institutions of the Ottoman Empire in a European language and is regarded as one of the classic works of early Ottoman studies. - Volume 1 deals with the constitution, whilst Volume 2 covers the administration. At the beginning of Volume 1 is a twenty-page list of the sources used.
