The collection, which covers a wide range of topics, addresses numerous areas of early modern medicine, including internal diseases (intermittent fever, dysentery, diarrhea, syphilis), neurological and mental disorders (catalepsy, epilepsy, insomnia, forgetfulness, hypochondria), gynecological and obstetric conditions (purpura puerperarum, fluor albus, chlorosis), sensory disorders (night blindness), nutritional and metabolic problems (bulimia, bile, acids), as well as therapeutic procedures such as bloodletting, cupping, and emetics. It also includes treatises on medicinal plants (St. John’s wort, sage) and general pathological issues. The volume concludes with the medical-philosophical epistolary dissertations by Waldschmidt and Dola, as well as Scheffer’s edition of Galen’s “Methodus sanitatis tuendae.” An insightful cross-section of academic medicine in the late 17th century, with a particular focus on the Jena medical faculty.
