London: Richard Phillips 1806. 22,5 x 14 cm. Includes a engr. map and a engr. plan. 157 pp., 1 unnumbered page, 1 leaf. A later hardback with coloured paper covers and a gold-embossed spine label.
(Rubbed, upper corners slightly bumped. Book block cut only at the top. The leaves up to section I have holes in the spine from a previous binding. Map and plan have brown spots. Tarnished and with some foxing in places.)

Depons (1715–1812), a French civil servant and traveller during the colonial era, describes the land, population, administration, trade and law, as well as the customs and traditions of Spanish colonial society and the indigenous population. Of particular interest are his detailed accounts of the cultivation and production of cocoa, indigo, sugar, cotton, coffee and tobacco. His book ranks among the most important European sources on Venezuela in the period immediately preceding the independence movements in South America. - Includes a map of the Captaincy General and a plan of the city of Caracas.
