Gay 337. Henze I, 573 und II, 48. - First edition of the report on the joint Bornu expedition to explore Central Africa from Kouka/Bornu to Sackatoo. The third explorer, Dr. Oudney, died during the expedition. The large fold-out map is the “first map of Central Sudan based on measurements and containing a wealth of detail, on which the familiar features of the map between Karnem and Sokoto appear in a partially distorted but essentially accurate arrangement. With the exception of BARTH, this map remained the sole reference for these regions” (Henze II, 48). - The report begins with Denham’s account, followed by Clapperton’s descriptions, and concludes with an appendix containing letters, documents, and notes. - Full title: "Narrative of Travels and Discoveries in Northern and Central Africa, in the Years 1822, 1823, and 1824, by Major Denham, Captain Clapperton, and the Late Doctor Oudney, Extending across the Great Desert to the Tenth Degree of Northern Latitude, and from Kouka in Bornou to Sackatoo, the Capital of the Fellatah Empire."
