From around 1904, Dr Emil Stephan served as a staff surgeon on board the survey vessel *Möwe* in German New Guinea. He took the opportunity to carry out ethnographic studies, particularly on Neupommern and Neumecklenburg (now Neuirland). After a prolonged stay in Berlin, he travelled back to German New Guinea on 7 September 1907 and took charge of the German naval expedition to Neumecklenburg. At the expedition’s headquarters in Muliama, he fell seriously ill in May 1908 and died in Namatanai (Central Neumecklenburg) on 25 May 1908.
