Hugo Obermaier (1877–1946) made a lasting contribution to research into the Palaeolithic period. He explored all the major caves in Europe and Africa whilst also teaching at universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The Hugo Obermaier Society was founded in Erlangen in 1951 in his memory.
