Adolf Erik Baron von Nordenskiöld was a professor at Stockholm University, a polar explorer, cartographer and travel writer of Finnish-Swedish descent. In 1878–79, he became the first seafarer to circumnavigate Europe and Asia, crossing the Northeast Passage in the process.
Various areas of the Svalbard archipelago are named after Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, as is the world’s longest ski marathon, the Nordenskiöldsloppet. Nordenskiöld had founded this race in 1884 to prove that the members of his expeditions were capable of covering long distances in a short space of time.
