(Scuffed and bumped; spine cover with missing sections. The title pages bear library and deaccession stamps from the Oriental Institute of the University of Leipzig, as well as a handwritten call number. Tanned; a small watermark on the top edge; slightly stained throughout.)
Henze III, S. 646 f. - The first German partial edition of Olivier’s famous travelogue ‘Voyage dans l’empire Othoman’ from 1801. Guillaume Antoine Olivier (1756–1814), a physician and naturalist, travelled throughout the Near East for six years and returned to France in 1798 with an extensive natural history collection. In 1800, he became a member of the Académie des Sciences in Paris and was appointed professor of zoology at the Veterinary College in Alfort. The first complete German edition was published in Weimar from 1802 onwards. This translation by Müller covers Olivier’s experiences and observations from his departure from Baghdad in May 1796 until his return to Paris at the end of 1798. It forms a continuation of the first two volumes already published in Weimar, which contain his accounts of his travels through Turkey, Egypt, Syria and Mesopotamia.
