The book features figures from tombs dating from the Han to the Tang dynasties. It illustrates Chinese religious beliefs and social traditions and shows how these are reflected in ancient burial rites. Furthermore, it explains why objects buried with the dead can be regarded as reliable indicators of the material culture of the living. With a foreword by W. Perceval Yetts and, according to the title, printed in Germany. Bookplate ‘Georg G. Johansen’ and stamp on the endpaper.
