Description of the third Royal Prussian Turfan Expedition, led by Albert Grünwedel, to what is now the Chinese province of Xinjiang. Accompanied by Albert von Le Coq, among others, the expedition spent two years exploring primarily the northern part of the province. Unlike previous expeditions, Grünwedel proceeded with much greater care; although he had entire cave walls and frescoes chiseled out and transported to Europe, precise photographs and drawings of the sites were made beforehand.
