Löwendahl II, 797. - Erstausgabe. - Abel war Botaniker unter Lord Amhersts Botschaft. Er sammelte Pflanzen für die Royal Botanical Gardens (Kew) und wurde von Joseph Banks mit Werkzeug und einem in Kew ausgebildeten Gärtner ausgestattet, welcher die Pflanzen pflegte, die auf den Heimtransport warteten (Vgl. Löwendahl). - Die Tafeln zeigen neben Ansichten auch Darstellungen von Flora und Fauna, darunter ein fliegender Fisch und ein (Borneo-)Orang-Utan. Der britische Botaniker Robert Brown (1773-1858) benannte die Pflanzengattung Abelia zu Ehren des Authors. Auch der Sumatra-Orang-Utan (Pongo abelii), erstbeschrieben von René Primevère Lesson 1827, wurde nach Abel benannt.
