Radierung auf feinstrukturiertem Bütten. Plattengröße 24,1 x 17,7 cm. Bartsch 278; Seidlitz 278 II; Nowell-Usticke 278, 1st. state (rechnet den von Seidlitz und New Hollstein als I. Zustand bezeichneten Druck als "Trial Poof" = Probedruck); New Hollstein 237 II. Zustand (von II; mit der Beseitigung des Kratzers auf dem Ring und Überarbeitungen am Geländer und Mantel).

An wenigen Stellen auf Plattenkante beschnitten, sonst mit winzigem Rändchen um die Plattenränder; ein rückseitiger Sammlerstempel schlägt am unteren weißen Rand schwach durch: rückseitig Falze bzw. Montagereste. Insgesamt von sehr schöner Erhaltung.
Few places trimmed on the platemark, otherwise with thread margins around the platemark; One collectors stamp shows through slightly from the back within the white area on the bottom of the sheet; on the back some paper stripes and remains of previous mounting. Overall in beautiful condition.

"The physician and writer Ephraïm Hezekiah Bueno (1599 - 1665), also known by the Latinized name Bonus, came from a Portuguese Jewish family that had already produced a number of renowned doctors. In 1625, for instance, his father was called to Prince Maurits's sickbed because of his reputation as a physician. Bueno wrote poems in Spanish, made translations, and was also an important backer of the Jewish printing-house run by Samuel Menasseh ben Israel, as well as being one of its customers. Menasseh ben Israel lived across the road from Rembrandt in the Jodenbreestraat and may have been portrayed by him as early as 1636 (B. 269). It was probably he who brought about the meeting between Bueno and Rembrandt.
Bueno is shown standing, like Jan Asselijn and Jan Six in Rembrandt's portraits of them made in the same year. He lingers at the bottom of a staircase with his hand on the banister and wears a dark suit, with sharply contrasting white collar and cuff, a cape cast loosely over his shoulders, and a hat with a broad brim. A wide strip under the portrait was left blank for a text, but none was ever added.
This portrait is exceptional among Rembrandt's etched works because it was not executed directly on the plate or with the aid of drawings, but was based on a preliminary study painted on a panel about the same size as the print ..." Ein in jeder Weise vollkommenes Exemplar, von unberührt frischer Erhaltung. ... So schön von größter Seltenheit." (Boerner 33)
