S.M.S. ISSUE NO. 1 - 6. New. York: The Letter Edged in Black Press 1968. Boxes approx. 34.5 x 19 x 2.5–4 cm. A series of six portfolios featuring various prints and multiples by a range of artists, including Lichtenstein, Hamilton, Oppenheim, Oldenburg, Duchamp, Cage, Christo and others. Edited by William Copley. Original shipping boxes.

From the inventory of Galerie Der Spiegel, Cologne - Inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s reproductions and multiples of ‘La boîte-en-valise’ (the box in a suitcase), Copley set out in 1966 to create a new form of art journal. He invited a wide range of artists, writers and musicians to submit a work of art to be reproduced and published without commentary in a boxed collection, available by post-order subscription in a print run of 2,000 copies. The deliberately ambiguous title ‘S.M.S.’, which was an inside joke between Copley and his lawyer, stood for ‘Shit must stop’
