"These boxes contain my cards, plastic bags, questions, mini-posters and statements from the last two years. I made them for exhibitions and demonstrations, sometimes to protest against certain things, or simply because there was nothing else to do. I sent some of the papers to friends; they’re little snippets of letters. As there wasn’t enough of each item to fill all a hundred boxes, most of them contain different things. That doesn’t matter. What bothers me more is that these are things not meant to be stacked inside one another. They served their purpose once, but I know they’re no longer of any use here. I hesitate to gather them up because I fear this box is a sort of coffin, preserving a vague memory of something that no longer interests me. However, I do not know whether it was not my intention from the outset that this would be the case. Being part of what one rejects may, particularly in art, seem contradictory only to those who still consider themselves secure and protected from contradictions.” (J. Gerz, translated from french).
