La Rochefoucauld, François de: Maximes et réflexions morales. Paris: P. Didot l'ainé 1796. 31 x 23,8 cm. 2 vols., XXIII, 147 pp., 1 unnumbered page. Red morocco, 5 bands, circa 1880. Title on spine and elaborate gilding on spine; covers with gilded fillets and a wide dentelle border, gilding on the fore-edge and inner edges, gilt edges; signed by the bookbinder “David.”

Copy with very wide margins. - At the beginning, on the white page, a seven-line handwritten note, possibly by Alexandre Dumas the Younger: “Know that this book, full of good lessons, was loyally won from the noble Jean de Billard by Antoine Vollon—on December 6, 1873—and that it was I who lost and paid for it. ADumas.”
