With a woodcut frontispiece, 20 woodcut plates, 4 chromolithographic plates, 8 folded maps and numerous woodcut illustrations in the text. LXVIII, 384, 12 pp. Original linen binding with gilt cover vignette, spine title and decor.
(Slightly bumped, corners and edges rubbed, cover stained, hinges loose. The reverse of the endpaper and the flyleaf are affected by foxing. The front cover and title page have yellowed due to contact with the tissue paper. Minimally yellowed, with slight age spots in places. A few leaves have small marginal defects caused by trimming. The last two of the 12 pages of publishers’ advertisements show brown streaks and paper damage along the outer margin. The maps have slight staining along the margins.)
Carter/Muir, PMM 362. - First English edition, published in the same year as the first German edition. - “In 1874 he began work at Mycenae, and here too his excavations were, once again thanks to good fortune, more successful than anyone could have expected. After discovering a slab platform which he took to be the original ground level, he persisted in the seemingly fruitless task of excavating down to the bedrock and there came across the six great shaft graves and the vast treasure of gold, silver and bronze, as well as fine stone and ivory objects, which remains the greatest of all archaeological finds” (Carter/Muir). - Handwritten note ‘Gift from the author. December 1877’ on the recto side of the frontispiece. - From the library of Bernhard III of Saxe-Meiningen (1851–1928), the last ruling Duke of Saxe-Meiningen from 1914 to 1918 and Colonel-General of the Prussian Army.
