VD18 14615118. - The only known printing of the first catalogue of paintings in the Imperial and Royal Collection at the Upper Belvedere, compiled on the occasion of the reorganisation of the gallery carried out by Christian von Mechel in 1781 on behalf of Emperor Joseph II. The catalogue is regarded as one of the earliest museum catalogues ever to have been compiled on a scholarly basis; it lists the holdings by room and is organised into the Italian, Dutch and German schools. For each work, the artist, subject, technique and dimensions are specified. An extensive index of artists concludes the volume. The four folded copper plates show floor plans and views of the Belvedere.
