With a woodcut printer’s mark on the title page and the final leaf, as well as 14 (of 15) engraved plates and 1 double-page copperplate text plate. 4 leaves, 32, 296 pp., 2 leaves. Parchment, bound in four bands with gold-stamped fillet on the covers, corner fleurons on the covers, label on the spine and gilt edges.
(Slightly rubbed, with minimal wear. The first plate, inscribed ‘S’, is missing. Flyleaf with a handwritten note in brown ink. The title page is stamped on the lower edge of the recto and has a stamped bookplate glued to the verso. Insignificant signs of age, with a few minor stains here and there.)

Poggendorff I, 812. - “A work enriched with many highly erudite prolegomena, and copperplate engravings inserted within the text” (Cicognara). - An edition by Giovanni Poleni of the classic treatise on the Roman water supply. Frontinus, who served as curator aquarum of the city of Rome from 97 AD, provides one of the most important ancient sources on the construction, administration and operation of Roman aqueducts. The copperplate engravings depict various river courses, numerous schematic representations of aqueducts and tables.
