Caylus, (Anne Claude Philippe de Tubieres, Comte de): Recueil d'antiquites egyptiennes, etrusques, grecques et romaines. 6 vols. and Supplement in 7 vols. (Mixed editions.). Paris: Desaint & Saillant (Vol. I; III), Duchesne (vol. II) and Tilliard (vol. IV-VII) 1752-67. 25,5 x 18,5 cm. With 7 engraved allegorical frontispieces, 6 engraved title vignettes, 829 (folded) numbered copper plates, as well as numerous engraved header vignettes and small emblematic text plates. Brown mottled leather with back label and rich gilding on the spine decoration. The edges are of varying colours.
(Scuffed and bumped; in places more heavily scuffed or with imperfections in the binding. The title labels on the spines of volumes 4, 5 and 7 are partly detached or missing. Inside, only slight moisture or age stains; only the plates at the end of volume 7 have a slight watermark around the edges.)
Cmp. Brunet 1705. Cohen-R. 211 (1752-1757). - A comprehensive compendium which is rarely found bearing the year of publication of the first volume, 1752. Due to its small print run, the work had to be re-edited in 1761. – As the monuments depicted were engraved from the originals and generally not from other works, Caylus’s work retains its scholarly value. It depicts numerous monuments, sculptures and everyday objects such as vases, tableware, jewellery, coins, inscribed tablets, maps, plans, etc. – Volume II contains the additional plates 58* and 58**, whilst Volume VI contains an additional, unnumbered plate on page 224.
