Nemesis (The Great Fortune) [c. 1501]
Copperplate engraving on laid paper with watermark ‘Schrobenhausen coat of arms’ (Meder No. 195). 32,1 x 22,6 cm. Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum 33; Meder 72, 2nd state, f. – With the scratch downward from the man on the bridge. The modelling of the face and the contrasts in the landscape are somewhat less pronounced. The cloud dots are still visible. Probably a later and despite significant damage, still beautiful, clear print dating from around 1570.
(Trimmed along the edge of the platemark. Approximately 1 cm is missing at the top, with a few millimetres lost on the other sides. Browned and heavily restored. Large, closed gaps in the corners and various cracks and defects that have been expertly glued..)
