(Folded down the centre. A small tear along the fold. Damage to the paper at the lower left edge. Crease marks on the left-hand corners. Tarnished and with minimal staining.)
A charming, personal letter to the art dealer and collector Arthur von Daehne, in which the author, together with ‘Herr von John’ (John von Freyend), expresses his gratitude for a gift intended for him. He dismisses the recipient’s association with subtle humour: the landscape and figure reminded him more of Moses, ‘wie er auf dem Berge das Gesetz des Menschenanstandes schreibt’, than of Gregorius auf dem Stein. Nevertheless, he was very pleased by the gesture, and he would ‘in Ehren halten’ the photograph sent to him.
