(Slightly rubbed; front cover has two small holes; back cover has tiny scratch marks. Title page reattached with a closed tear. Title page stamped. The first 4 leaves of the preface have backing paper within the text block, with minimal loss of text. Moisture damage throughout to the upper corners of the leaves; approx. 100 leaves, with no loss of text, have been backed or reinforced with adhesive tape. Slightly browned and with slight age-related staining in places.)

Giovio focuses in particular on the Italian Wars and the great European powers of his time, yet combines this chronicle-like account with numerous details about prominent figures, countries and political conditions in Europe, Asia and Africa. - One of Giovio’s major works; he is regarded as the first biographer of Leonardo da Vinci and authored an early biography of Copernicus.
