Labes, Johann Wilhelm: Dissertatio historica de Saxo-Vinariensi vigilantiae ordine. (Jena or Wittenberg: Litteris Hornianis 1734). 20 x 16,5 cm. With an engraved frontispiece and an engraved portrait vignette. 3 leaves, 24 pages. Reinforced thread stitching without a fold-over.
(Slight discolouration. Title page with ownership note removed.)
A rare doctoral thesis on the Order of Vigilance, founded in 1732 by Duke Ernst August of Saxe-Weimar. Following an overview of contemporary orders of chivalry, the work examines the origins, symbolism, statutes and significance of the Saxe-Weimar order, whose motto is ‘vigilando ascendimus’. An early and important source for the history of German courtly and chivalric orders of the 18th century.
