With 3 title pages featuring a coloured vignette and 29 coloured copperplate plates. XIV, 339; XII, 324, 104; XII, 313 pp. Original illustrated hardback volumes in a private linen slipcase.
(The bindings are slightly stained by fingermarks, rubbed, with the corners and edges slightly bumped. The frontispiece of Vol. 1 has a repaired tear in the top edge. The title pages and plates are discoloured. Slight staining; minimal signs of age and wear.)
Lipperheide Of 41. - A rare complete set of this early reference work on European orders of chivalry (phaleristics). The three volumes cover German orders of chivalry (1817) and non-German orders of chivalry (1818). The supplementary third volume contains additions and expansions (1819). Gottschalck presents brief summaries of the orders’ statutes, lists the recipients of the orders and provides detailed descriptions of the insignia. The plates show the individual insignia as well as three members of the orders in ceremonial dress.
