Nissen, IVB 524. Anker 266. – The bound section is regarded as the first volume of the work. – “For decades, Alexander König pursued the plan to publish a major work on all the birds of the Nile, from its mouth to its source. He explored this region on six expeditions between 1897 and 1913 and published his findings in numerous scientific papers. He intended to publish a major, comprehensive work entitled ‘The Birds of the Nile’. [...] In 1935, Volume II, dealing with birds of prey, was published, and he had already prepared manuscripts for further volumes, although these had previously appeared in the *Journal für Ornithologie*. It remained his express wish until his death that this work should be continued [...]. The considerable delay in the publication of the present volume – no further volumes will be published – is due to various causes, the least significant of which was the confiscation of the paper, which had already been procured for printing, in the Russian-occupied zone. Furthermore, a large number of already finished printed sheets and the majority of the printing plates for the many planned photographs had been lost, whereas the magnificent bird plates now published here were preserved in the museum. This made it possible to fulfil that wish once the necessary funds had been accumulated from the endowment fund” (from the Preface).
