ADB XII, 8 ff: “Among Hensler’s literary works, his contributions to the history of diseases take pride of place; these include the ‘History of the Venereal Disease that Broke Out in Europe at the End of the 15th Century’, the first volume of which was published in 1783 and the second part of the second volume in 1789, meaning it remained unfinished; the programme ‘De herpete seu formica veterum’, published later (1801), is to be regarded as a supplement to it, and his treatise: ‘On Western Leprosy in the Middle Ages’. 1790. 2nd ed. 1794. — Both works are characterised by a thorough collection of material and an unbiased examination and assessment thereof; the conclusions he draws from these investigations into the nature of both diseases, syphilis and leprosy, and the relationship between them, appear justified only insofar as he has demonstrated the non-American origin of syphilis and shown that a form of disease which, as he believes, is related to syphilis, though not identical to it, can be traced back to the earliest times of antiquity.”
