Paris: Didot le jeune 1776-80. 19,5 x 13,2 cm. With 1 coloured copperplate title page and 600 (of 640) coloured copperplate plates. 604 (of 690) leaves. Light brown speckled leather with one green and one red spine label, and floral decoration on the spine.

(Scuffed and bumped; corners partly split; covers slightly stained and partly showing scratch marks. One volume torn at the lower headband; one volume with a restored tear at the front spine joint; one volume heavily bumped at the upper headband. The numbering on the spine labels does not correspond to the contents. The white half-title page of Vol. 1 has a tear; one text page in the volume is creased and has a small tear at the margin. The ‘Cabaret’ plate in Vol. 2 has water stains and brown spots within the board. The plates in the first and second volumes are numbered in pencil outside the board. The text page on the oat plant in Vol. 3 has a tear in the outer margin; the plate on Circaea alpina has a small hole in the outer margin. In Vol. 5, a text page in the upper spine has come loose from the binding and shows crease marks; 3 plates are marked in brown ink. The plates in Volumes 3, 4 and 5 are numbered in brown ink. Slightly browned, with minor signs of age. As with most copies, the 50 preliminary leaves comprising the introduction, table française, nouvelle table and errata are missing here too. Excludes the unfinished Volume 6.)

The plates were designed and engraved by the author himself; their lifelike and detailed execution established his outstanding reputation as a botanical illustrator. The work describes the flora of the Paris region according to Linnaeus’s classification system and supplements the descriptions of the plants with information on synonyms, botanical characteristics, medicinal properties and uses.
